“Everybody
Can Be An Artist… If They Try!”
By Michael Dale
It doesn’t matter who you
are or what you do… you could become an artist.
Think about it… What is a drawing? In simple terms, it is nothing more
than a group of lines. Even at its most complicated, the only
difference will be that the lines are reinforced with smudges and other
marks.
Is it really as easy as that? The answer is “Yes!” Pick up a pen or
pencil and scribble a few lines. It doesn’t matter what the lines are
like… just do it.
- They could be straight, curved, circular or irregular
wavy lines.
- The lines could be thick or thin
- You could draw constant or varied thickness lines
The likelihood is that the result of drawing this series of lines is
nothing more than a random mess… it is definitely not what you would
call Art.
Now, try again… try to draw a picture of one your hands. It will not
matter which hand… you could even choose the hand holding the pen. If
drawn well, this will make an interesting piece of artwork.
However, the result of your artistic attempts could be very much less
satisfactory than you would like. The drawing could look very different
from the hand in front of you… the thumb could be too long or one of
the fingers might appear to be a little crooked.
Again, this is not what you would call Art… In your eyes it is a bad
drawing that proves you are not an artist. Yet, when you take another
look and compare it with the first scribbled sketch, your ‘hand’
drawing definitely looks more realistic. At least it does look a little
like the hand it should represent. It is not just a random scrawl.
The problem is that you
will be aware of drawing errors sooner than you can see what you have
drawn well…
The trick to
becoming an
artist is to try again. Instead of tearing-up the drawing failure,
identify what you think is wrong and attempt to put it right… try to
improve upon mistakes with practice.
Persist with your drawing until it is as good as you can make it. This
way your drawing skills will increase. And, as your drawing skills
develop, you will gain confidence as an artist.
Go on, give it a try…
surprise yourself and find the artist inside you.
